Building a Modern, Permanent Tipi

May 24, 2024

A tipi is a unique and fascinating structure. Historically, it was a very useful and mobile form of housing that allowed Native American tribes to migrate with the seasons, follow the fruits of the land as summer blossomed, and track animal movements. This mobility enabled tribes to easily feed and clothe themselves and have the raw materials to live and build more tipis.

Today, we are often more permanently settled on a piece of land, so we no longer need the mobility of a tipi. However, the tipi remains a very useful and attractive option for a permanent structure. With this in mind, I created a design for a permanent tipi that incorporates modern materials and techniques.

Steps to Build a Permanent Tipi

  1. Frame Construction:
    • Use galvanized steel poles instead of wood to construct the tipi’s frame. This provides a durable and long-lasting foundation.
  2. Reinforcement:
    • Add rebar to the tops and bottoms of window frames and door frames for extra strength and stability.
  3. Covering the Frame:
    • Tie wire bamboo mats to cover the steel frame. This adds an organic touch and serves as a base for the next layer.
    • Over the bamboo mats, tie wire stucco wire to the frame. This layer helps the stucco adhere properly.
  4. Applying Stucco:
    • Apply two coats of stucco to the entire structure. This will create a solid, weather-resistant exterior.
  5. Windows and Doors:
    • Build windows out of steel and plexiglass for durability and insulation.
    • Construct heavy steel or wood doors to secure the entrance.
  6. Weatherproofing:
    • Apply two coats of top-grade roof elastomeric to the entire outside of the structure. This will ensure the tipi is waterproof and protected from the elements.
  7. Flooring:
    • Pour a cement floor to create a solid and stable base for your tipi.

And there you have it – your very own permanent tipi. This modern adaptation combines the timeless elegance of the traditional tipi with the durability and stability of contemporary building materials.

Om Shiva.

Dear Friends,

We humbly ask for your support in building our community and ashram, a sanctuary where people in need can find peace, healing, and a sense of belonging. Our vision is to create a self-sufficient, holistic space inspired by the timeless wisdom of the Bhagavad Gita, the principles of The Kybalion, and the practice of Kriya Yoga. This ashram will offer a refuge for meditation, spiritual growth, and practical skills to lead a more harmonious life.

Your generous donation will help us construct sustainable housing, provide essential resources, and support programs that nurture both the body and soul. Together, we can build a place of compassion and unity, where everyone is welcome and supported on their journey.

Thank you for being a part of this transformative mission. Every contribution, no matter the size, brings us closer to making this dream a reality.

With heartfelt gratitude, Randall Rex
